WHS gives student teachers the opportunity to prepare them for real life classroom like situations. I got the pleasure in interviewing John Bourque and getting to know why he is interested in teaching.
Q: What made you want to be a teacher? A: “Because I enjoy working with people and I enjoy the learning process. I also want to work in a field that I feel has meaning and working with students everyday feels exciting and meaningful.”
Q: What school and and major are you doing? A: “I am in the English content area and attend CCSU. I am working to finish my master’s degree and obtain certification.
Q: What do you enjoy about your content area? I enjoy the writing process and creative writing. I also enjoy teaching students’ how to express themselves.”
Q: How has interactions with students been?
A: Students have been welcoming and the interactions have felt organic. I’’m getting to know everyone’s names to start and find out what they're interested in it’s exciting to get to know everybody.
Q:How has your host (Mr.Martin) been showing you things? A: Mr. Martin had a reputation that preceded him; that reputation is based on his passion for his work and the fact that he cares about his students. Mr. Martin has been showing me the importance of building relationships with students, and he has been supportive in including me in his classroom.
Q: Has family been supportive with you pursuing your goal to be a teacher?
A: My family has been very supportive during this process. Since I am a single dad, I could not do this program without my family’s help. They are excited that I am working towards my certification and master’s degree and are willing to go out of their way to help me succeed with my goals.
