An Exciting Trip for the Instrumental Students as They Head to Broadway

On May 17, an exciting field trip took place in New York City!  Band, Orchestra, and Color Guard students had the amazing opportunity to watch a live Broadway production. Every year the instrumental classes go on a field trip, whether it be a four day trip to compete in another state or a day trip to watch a performance. This year the choice was to travel to Broadway to see the musical, Miss Saigon.
Miss Saigon tells the heartbreaking story of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman who gets left behind by her american lover during the final days of the Vietnam War.
The students had a chance to watch the first act during one of their classes and were very eager to find out the ending of this musical.
The trip consisted of a lunch at Hard Rock Cafe, a walk around Time Square, and then show at the Broadway Theatre. The show was a major success with magnificent musical numbers, outstanding special effects, and wonderful characters. Some of the students were even singing the songs on the bus ride home.
The students that are apart of the Band, Orchestra, and Color Guard already know what it takes to put on a concert and a marching band performance, but this trip gave them a chance to see how musical productions work together to make a live show.  
WHS music teacher David Dion helped organize the trip so that the students could see performances to help them as musicians. “I feel that it is important for growing musicians to see and hear live performances of professional musicians in practical and socially popular situations,” Dion said.
Many of the students loved the day trip to New York City and can’t wait to take more instrumental trips in the future.
