by Milena Brodowicz '27 Prior to watching “The Crown,” I had no interest in the British royal family, but this drama instantly hooked me. It makes viewers feel like they are a fly on the wall at Buckingham Palace. You feel as though you are there with everyone. The music, screenplay, and moodiness of the show enchanted me. It helps viewers feel personally connected to each family member and leaves them interested in what's to come next. “The Crown” is an award-winning drama on Netflix about the British royal family. It won a Golden Globe for best television drama in 2017 and the Golden Globe for best supporting role in 2024. This show has proven its worth among other amazing dramas, and I completely agree. After watching all six seasons, I have little to no negative comments about any. They are the most intense, the most educational, and the most well-written.
As someone who has watched all six seasons, I would put the first season as No. 1. This absolutely does not mean that the other five are not worth watching, but Season 1 has more of the hidden drama that isn't as well known. This applies especially to Princess Margaret and her romantic scandal. As well as the drama, the Season 1 actors are great. You can tell that each actor studied their character very well. Lastly, I want to touch on how the drama portrays Winston Churchill and his relationship with the queen. It’s very personal and shows how Churchill influenced the queen's reign. Just behind Season 1, I would put Season 4. I loved the introduction of Diana; it paints her character well and sets the scene for her experience in the royal family. Although Season 4 is very well done, I wasn't a huge fan of Margaret Thatcher and the drama surrounding her and Queen Elizabeth II. Taking the third-place spot would be Season 3. A highlight of this season is the historical episodes; my favorite one was about the mine disaster at Aberfan. This episode was very well done and evokes so much emotion, especially when the town sang together. Overall, this season has great content along with amazing music. Coming in at No. 4 is Season 6. I absolutely love this season because of the William and Kate romance. It was so entertaining and the actors did a great job embodying the characters. This is the last season, and the producers did well closing it out while also leaving you with things to think about. Fifth place, also second to last, would be Season 2. Don’t look over this season just because it is lower on the list. Season 2 has a lot of political content and helps inform viewers about the government at the time, which seems boring, but they make it so engaging. Last but not least is Season 5. It’s still amazing, but just not as memorable. I still love this season because of the focus on Diana. Great screenplay and music. To conclude, “The Crown” will never not be a good show. Even after watching the show again, it never gets boring. They keep their viewers hooked and don't let them go. Everybody should watch this show.
