Source: @courtsidecooper By Damian Salvatore Sardo, Ryan Arnold Jr., and Amin Osmanovic '27 Following a 25-0 season-opening loss to the Farmington Riverhawks on Thursday, Sept. 10, and a 51-20 loss to the Pomperaug Panthers on Sept. 17, the Wethersfield Eagles football team is refocusing as players try to build their momentum. After graduating 12 starting seniors, the newly led squad faces a crucial transition year under five returning captains. Captains Trevor Feliciano, Jacob Campanello, Sam Gilbert, Adam Santilli, and Kayden Dillon have a lot of weight on their shoulders and much to prove heading into the season. After two devastating losses, the Eagles have a lot of proving to do. We interviewed a few players on the team to see what went wrong these first couple weeks. Senior captain and quarterback Adam Santilli had this to say about the loss: "It’s a team effort, definitely a wake-up call for us, and everything has to get better moving forward." Senior captain Jacob Campanello, two-way linebacker and running back, offered a few critiques: "We came out onto the field with high hopes, but we couldn't compete. Everything started falling apart once we stepped onto that field. It's as if we lost control." Junior Levi Curry, starting defensive end, said, "A lot of things went wrong, like little things … We were nervous, just not playing like a team." The Eagles now turn their focus to the first Friday game of the year against another 0-2 team, Northwest Catholic, where the team aims to re-establish an identity it once had. Northwest Catholic is a historically small team, and it should end up being a manageable matchup if everything goes right. Moving forward, the Eagles' success will depend on their ability to play as a team, build confidence, and create a better environment to bring a new identity to the field. The stage is set at Cottone Field this Friday at 6 p.m. as the Eagles clash with Northwest Catholic. Keep your eyes locked on Wethersfield sports socials for the official theme, you won't want to miss this one. Pack the stands, bring the noise, and let's all show up big!
