The WHS Girls Volleyball Team has gotten off to a rocky start this fall season. Lead by Coach Debbie O’Brien and senior co-captains Sabrina Torres, Kit Kerekes and Trisha Signorello, the Varsity Eagles have a record of 1-13. When questioned on how the Eagles keep the moral of the team up in these tough games, captain Sabrina Torres said, “We really try to focus on it being fun, even though we do get frustrated sometimes. We try to make sure that everyone is smiling, our spirit is through the roof. We’re so energetic!” The Eagles “Dig Pink” volleyball game for breast cancer awareness was held on Friday, October 14th against Rocky Hill. Despite another close loss, the Eagles’ spirit was high. The student section and junior varsity teams cheered throughout, keeping positive energy in the gym. The Eagles have five more games this season. Their senior night will be at home Friday, October 28th against East Hartford.

by Max Gentino (16) Wethersfield baseball is on a mission this year. Now fighting in Class L for a try at the state championship, Wethersfield has some new opponents ahead of them . In a sit down conversation with the captain, Brian Vieira, I had a chance to get some inside details on the team. Brian and most of the team have been playing in Wethersfield since T-Ball and have been falling in love with the sport to this day. He said, “It's almost surreal...a lot of the friends I've played with in little league have been with me through it all the way to senior year of high school. It's heartwarming and just an overall great feeling.” The team this year has tons of chemistry together that can really help them play good together and make good decisions. Last year they fell short of the amount of pitchers they wanted on the team. Brian explained “It was a great learning experience for me. It was my first time pitching and I had to step up a lot so we could have a good year.” Since then, the Eagles have lost even more pitchers and are only down to 5 seniors on the team. Junior, Colin Grotke was a big pitching tool for this year but has since thrown his arm out for most of the season. Coach Bagdasarian has been searching for answers and may have to result into pitching infielders and outfielders if needed. Jimmy Sullivan is only a sophomore and is already considered as a power hitter for varsity. With his long arms he can really get a hold of the ball. He’s also got a good shot at being a great pitcher for the team. The juniors and underclassmen have a good outlook on their future years due to the good amount of kids they have trying out. Tryouts are taking place this week until Wednesday of next week. Here’s a link to the teams schedule. by Joey Carrozzella (16)
The 2016 basketball season came to an end last night in a loss at East Catholic. Even though we took a loss on the court we took a win on the year as a whole. the 2016 was a rollercoaster ride, with so many ups and only a few downs. The environment is something I will never forget, and the relationships made are some that will last a lifetime. As the mascot of the Wethersfield Eagles, I was always proud to go out and support my team no matter what the score was. These guys believed until the final buzzer Every game, So as a mascot it was my job to never give up on them. Win or Lose we were a team so we won and lost together and i never felt like they didn't give us their all. Mario was the guy on the team that always showed up when you least expected it. You never really knew what to expect until it was prime time, When the game got tense Mario would often step up. He showed his confidence by showing up in the prime time. Mario put a lot of work in to get a spot on that team and I give him all the credit in the world for how far he came. Now he is in the best shape of his life and has a stronger soul because of all the hard work he put in. Mario says he compares his game to JJ Redick, “I'm a pretty good shooter and i kind of base my game off my shot”. You can never sleep on a guy like Mario. Jake was more than just a player on the wethersfield basketball team but he was a leader on the team. The team followed his lead most times because of how much time and effort he put into the game. Jake is an incredible player, scorer, ball handler and more importantly he's a great friend. He always wanted to see his team get better and came a long way learning the message that the team is bigger than the player. I asked jake what how he felt about the season, He told me “We did what we had to do”. “We had another winning season 13-7 we even got a playoff win” Devon was the spark of the Eagles game in and game out. He showed up to every game with a type of flare that was unmatchable. When everyone had lost hopes, Devon would rise up and become the star. Devon walked around the court with the kind of swagger you see in a professional athlete and always seemed calm and composed. Even though Devon had trouble on the free throw line time, he was always back on defense to grab a steal and run the fast break. He finished in traffic better than anybody and always had the “eye of the tiger” on defense reading passing lanes like a book. I asked Devon how he felt the season went He told me about how he followed goals he set for the season. He later said “ we got better everyday and had a fun experience.” He compares his game to Rondo claiming “I play D and make things happen on offense” which is exactly what he did for the Eagles. Matt, Aka Lang brought a good vibe into every game. Lang was the guy who walked on to the court with a good spirit and walked off the court with the same spirit every night keeping hopes high in his fellow teammates. He could knock down a 15 footer off the backboard like- anybody as well as a shot at the elbow. He is tall and very skilled. He compares himself to Aldridge because “I got the baby J and play off my teammates”. He has a very unique style of playing the game and everyone on the team benefitted from it. I asked Matt what his favorite part of the season was, he said “it's more than just basketball, We grew up together.” Shows how lang cares for his team on and off the court. Michael Kelly or MK was the core of our defense. Mk was often times the guy to pull down the rebound after getting out rebounded 5 times in the possession, he was a fighter for the ball and a defensive powerhouse. MK was an incredible rebounder, as tall as he is he was good. down in the post but he was very trustable or even to bring the basketball up the floor. MK can shoot, pass, dribble, almost anything he is extremely quick and elusive, Whenever we needed a player to come to life we could always count on MK to start putting in work. Mk’s favorite part of the year was “chillin with all the bros in practice” and of course “getting those W’s.” Overall we had an amazing basketball season, none of us will ever forget. I want to thank each and every one of the players, staff, and parents for making it all happen. Without everyone involved the basketball experience wouldn't have been half as amazing. All these players have extremely bright futures ahead of them and i'm sure they will pursue everything they do with just as much effort as the put on the floor this year. If i can say one thing as the mascot, it's that I'm proud to be an Eagle! by Carolione Logozzo (16) The Wethersfield High School gymnastics team participated in their Class M State competition on February 27th at Pomperaug High School. Wethersfield’s final score was a 133.350 resulting in a fourth place finish. There were high hopes for the Wethersfield gymnastics team, for if they were in class S, there was a high chance of them placing in the top 3. Unfortunately, the team got into Class M this year, which was a very competitive class. Seeing that the top seven qualifying teams were all within a three-point range, the placings at states were anyone’s game. The team was up and ready for the challenge. Wethersfield’s goal was to walk away from the meet with medals around their neck, but they fell short of that goal. They lost to third place by .675 points to Fairfield Ludlowe. Regardless of not reaching their goal, they weren’t discouraged as they had a great overall season. One of Wethersfield’s top gymnasts and State Open qualifier, Hailey Olesen, reflects back on the season, as she said, “I am also very proud of my team, we reached our goal, beat Glastonbury, and placed 4th”. Wethersfield’s goal as a team was to reach a 136 by the end of the season, and they achieved a 136.9 against Glastonbury for the win. Wethersfield hadn’t beaten Glastonbury in over 8 years, so it was a huge milestone for the team. Along with a great season, three of Wethersfield’s gymnasts qualified for the State Open competition, which was held on March 5th at New Milford High School. Hailey Olesen, as mentioned before, and a sophomore, Abby Sullivan, qualified in all-around. Senior Taylor Garrey qualified as well for beam. As a senior, that was the last time Olesen was going to compete for a high school team. She reflects on the bitter-sweet ending as she says, “I was able to make friends with amazing people and see them all of the time, and I had an amazing coach. I am truly going to miss it.” Wethersfield’s head coach, Ashley Curreri, is extremely proud of her team this past season. She said, “I thought this season went extremely well. The team accomplished both individual and team goals allowing us to finish the season on a high note. I couldn’t be more proud of this group of young ladies”. by Megan Humphrey (2016) You might see them sprinting down the street or doing laps around the track. At the high school, they’re known as the Girls Cross Country team. Coach Stephen Carr and his team have high hopes for this season. The Wethersfield Girls Cross Country team is doing big things this year. They run six days a week, whether it be at meets or practice in order to train for their Conference meet at the end of the season. The team ended their regular season undefeated. They had an exciting win against Bristol Central on October 6 and it was a huge confidence booster for each of the runners. Senior Maddie Giolito said, “We want to be the first girl’s Cross Country team to win our conference.” That goal wasn’t too far out of reach. The team won their conference by a narrow two points and Coach Carr couldn’t have been more proud. The Cross Country girls were full of energy this year. For this year’s pep rally, the entire team dressed up in 80’s workout gear. Not only was it fun to see, it was a great way to show school spirit. This year’s team is full of enthusiasm and Giolito even described them as, “ Fast, fresh, and fierce!” All that practicing payed off and Wethersfield High School took home their first Girls Cross Country CCC title. Now, onto States. by Elijah Young (2017)
The Wethersfield Cross Country team switched to a more difficult class to face some of the toughest team this year. Their performances were still outstanding. This year they had a very difficult team they had to face this year and it was Bristol Central Rams . Both teams came in fired up and ready to put on there best run performance they had. Senior Troy stegman, the best distance runner in Wethersfield had an outstanding performance that day with a time of 17.58, placing first in the meet. But it wasn’t enough to put the eagles on top. They lost to the Rams by 1 point,2827. Senior Carl Diluvio who placed 16th in the meet had said,”This was one of the toughest lost we had because they were our only worry in our conference”. After that tough loss for the Eagles they still didn't lose confidence in each other or what they were still capable of doing. Later on that year they ended being CCC Champions in their conference. Running outstanding performances. As the Great senior Troy stegman ran a awesome time 17.11. Along with some other great performances by his teammates, senior Brendan Livingston running a 18.20 and Brian Heavren running a 18.00 flat. Putting the Eagles on top as they come out as the CCC Champions. |
